PSSSST

The foyer on the 2nd floor of building D2 is an open, multifunctional event space with no physical separation from the corridor. It regularly hosts multi-hour presentations, lectures, and events. Noise from the corridor and stairwell transmits directly into the room and repeatedly causes acoustic disturbances. Since no structural measures are planned, a design-based communication solution was developed.

As part of the design brief "PSSSST," students developed a communication medium to alert people in the corridor and stairwell in a timely and unambiguous way that an event is taking place in the foyer and to guide them toward quieter behavior. The solution was intended to function less as a prohibition and more as behavioral guidance. Conceptually, students were required to decide whether to employ a single, strong medium or multiple coordinated elements and to provide a clear justification for their chosen approach.
